Machine Learning Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Machine Learning Engineer who combines practical software skills with a strong academic background.

At Archangel Imaging, you will be working alongside a fun, experienced and forward-thinking team to deliver transformative AI solutions that help organisations like Network Rail, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the MOD better protect our service personnel, critical infrastructure and first responders over large, remote areas. But that’s not all! We work extensively with drones and robotics partners to create turn-key solutions, so you will have exposure to the latest cutting-edge technologies.

You will be joining a company that is enjoying great success. We have recently won the GENIUS NY program in New York (the largest accelerator program for unmanned systems in the world). In addition, we have won several exciting development projects with key defence customers.

The role

Joining us as a Machine Learning Engineer, you will have an opportunity to push the boundaries of autonomous drone navigation in a friendly, cutting-edge technology company. As part of the development of our autonomous drone navigation product, we are growing our team with the aim of bringing our solution to market. We are also constantly improving our visual navigation methods and need talented engineers and researchers to help drive our world-leading research.

Our drone platform will operate autonomously in challenging environments where no GPS or other navigation signals are available, in civil and military use cases. Our team develops hardware and software to allow drones to navigate using visual information (such as visual odometry, image registration, and terrain recognition). Therefore, we are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer who is interested in working on some of the most challenging computer vision and navigation tasks using state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms.

What will you be responsible for:

  • Researching, developing, and implementing state-of-the-art visual navigation algorithms
  • Working on solutions that can be deployed both to the cloud and to embedded systems
  • Testing algorithm performance on simulated and real-world data, including live flight trials
  • Analysing flight data to further improve the robustness and reliability of our algorithms
  • Keeping up to date with the latest advances on deep learning and visual navigation

You must have these to apply:

  • MSc or PhD degree in a relevant STEM subject
  • Excellent Python coding skills
  • Excellent Deep Learning skills (training, testing, evaluation, and deployment) and proficiency in PyTorch, Tensorflow/Keras or OpenCV
  • Experience researching and implementing computer vision solutions
  • Eagerness to learn our full software stack

Security clearance

Due to the sensitive nature of some of our work, it would be beneficial for candidates to be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for this role.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with object detection, image registration, segmentation, visual odometry or SLAM
  • Experience with cloud or embedded algorithm deployment
  • Experience with ROS

By joining us, you'll have:

  • The ability to make a measurable difference in a small company building cutting edge technology with big vision
  • Fast-paced environment with a positive, talented team
  • Forward-thinking, supportive culture with Monday paid lunch, quarterly company retreats and strategic alignment, flexible working hours, working from home and custom arrangements that matter to you
  • Exciting growth opportunities and training resources Including training to be a drone pilot
  • Merit-based compensation
  • 5% employer pension contribution
  • 25 days holiday + UK bank holidays
  • A variety of perks: Gym discounts, Cycle2work, shopping, and supermarket discounts plus many more!
  • VR headset / DJI drone upon passing probation
